Take the room size, the hustle and bustle, the little precious ones who are constantly underfoot ( why are they always <em>so<\/em> <em>hungry<\/em> ? ), then take into account the appliances, utensils, and the what-nots dumped on the counter. Add to this your tension as yet another dinner deadline not being met. Baby screaming, fries burning, telephone ringing, neighbor at the door <em>again <\/em>borrowing an egg. Sound familiar ? All this makes for potential accidents.<\/small><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><small>Let\u2019s take a quick look around the kitchen and look for a few some potential dangerous items :<\/small><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><small>Soaps, detergents, chemicals ( bleach, caustic soda, etc. ) stored under the sink.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Traps , bait and sprays used in the war against creepers, crawlers, and vermin.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Raw fruit and vegetables such as onions, garlic, hot peppers, cucumbers, grapes etc.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Flatware ( yes, even plastic ) , matches, stove, highchair, hot oven door,<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Glasses, cans, mugs, etc. left on the edge of the counter.<\/small><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><small>When cooking on the stove, always turn the pot handles towards the back.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Watch what you heat. Never leave cooking unattended (a \u201cwatched pot\u201d<em> does<\/em> boil).<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Store all sharps ( knives, forks, corkscrews, etc. ) and other<\/small> <small>dangerous<\/small> <small>utensils out of reach.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>ut latches on cabinets that<\/small> <small>contain cleaning liquids, bleach<\/small> <small>and dishwasher detergent.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Install a safety latch on the<\/small> <small>oven door if your child is able to open it.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Keep electrical cords out of reach. When an appliance isn\u2019t in use &#8211; unplug it.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Don&#8217;t keep \u201c harmless \u201c vitamins on the<\/small> <small>kitchen table. Iron pills are the<\/small> <small>leading cause of poisoning deaths<\/small> <small>in children under 6. Medications don\u2019t belong in the kitchen, the humidity breaks down it\u2019s effectiveness.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Keep hot foods and drinks<\/small> <small>away from the edge of tables and<\/small> <small>counters. Especially dangerous is hot drinks ona<\/small> <small>tablecloth, which a child can easily<\/small> <small>pull down.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>If you&#8217;re holding something<\/small> <small>hot, <u>don&#8217;t hold your child<\/u>, too.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Flammable liquids ( turpentine <em>et all<\/em> ) have no business being in the kitchen.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small><strong>NEVER<\/strong> cook with loose fitting clothing, they may catch fire.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Small pieces of fruit and vegetables can cause choking if swallowed by an infant, keep them out of reach.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Children should NEVER be allowed to use grinders, mixers, beaters, etc.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Infants should not be left in a highchair unattended &#8211; even \u201c for just a second \u201c.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>The microwave oven should be tested for radiation leaks every six months.<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Toys don\u2019t belong in the kitchen!<\/small><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><small>Remember, children have the knack of getting into \/ out of just where they <strong><em>don\u2019t<\/em><\/strong> belong !<\/small><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Nothing substitutes for supervision ! !<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Boruch Rofeh Cholim 1999<br>Permission is granted to print and redistribute this material for non-commercial purposes as long as credit line is included.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The kitchen, by its very nature, is by far the most dangerous room in a home.
